Comfortable all-day actuation falls between 42 and 50 cN for most hands. Twelve boards benched in August 2026 clustered there, including the KLP-80 Tide at 47 cN and NK68 Frost at 45 cN, while the heaviest tactile at 55 cN favored deliberate typists over speed.
Centinewtons (cN) measure the downward force that closes a switch. Lighter springs around 40 to 45 cN reduce finger travel effort during rapid text entry. Heavier springs above 50 cN resist resting-finger errors and give bottom-out feedback a firmer stop.
The corpus spreads evenly across the comfort band. Measured actuation forces ran 42 cN on the NK80 Range and M65 Cairn, 45 to 48 cN on the NK68 Frost, K40 Drift, M75 Fen, KLP-80 Tide, and Nord75 Pro, and 50 to 55 cN on the remaining five boards.
Fatigue depends on matching force to grip style. Heavy-handed typists bottom out regardless of spring weight and benefit from 48 to 55 cN damping the slam. Light-touch typists hover above the bump on tactiles and prefer 42 to 46 cN so hover-registering never happens by accident.
Hot-swap ownership converts force preference into a parts decision rather than a keyboard decision. Eight of the twelve corpus boards accept switch swaps without soldering, so a buyer who guesses wrong replaces a $35 switch set instead of a $150 keyboard.
