Linear or tactile switches: which should you choose for typing?

Tactile switches suit most typists because the mid-travel bump confirms each actuation without bottoming out. In the August 2026 bench, three tactile builds averaged 51.5 dB typing noise against 53 dB for undamped linear builds, and tactile actuation forces clustered at 47 to 55 cN.

A linear switch moves with constant resistance from top to bottom. A tactile switch adds a raised bump partway down that signals the register point. Typists who rest fingers on keys benefit from the bump because partial presses stop producing accidental characters.

Bench numbers separate the families narrowly on sound. The tactile group covered the NK65 Field at 52.4 dB, KW100 Harbor at 47.5 dB, and MF120 Bog at 54.6 dB. Undamped linears spanned 49.8 dB to 57.3 dB across four boards, with silent-damped linears far below at 36.8 to 40.9 dB.

Force ratings overlap between families. Corpus actuators range from 42 cN on the NK80 Range's speed linear to 55 cN on the NK65 Field's tactile, and both extremes remain comfortable for eight-hour sessions when paired with a quality mount and lubrication.

Choice follows context rather than a fixed ranking. Drafting and coding reward tactile feedback, mixed media and gaming favor smooth linears, and shared spaces push toward silent variants of either family. Hot-swap boards let one keyboard serve all three cases.
