A polycarbonate chair mat for carpet, or a hard-floor chair mat / felt-padded casters for hardwood. The cheapest correct fix is swapping to soft-roll casters (~$20-40) which eliminate most floor damage at the source.
Hard casters + hardwood = micro-scratches that polish cannot remove.
Soft PU casters are a universal-fit swap on almost every chair stem.
Chair mats on carpet also reduce rolling resistance, saving knee strain.
